Role Description/Criteria

The role of the Educational Support – Auslan Educational Interpreter is to support Deaf students to access the mainstream curriculum in the classrooms of our partner school.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Interpret information between students and teachers in designated classes.
  • Adapt the register or style of interpreting to fit the language needs of the student.
  • Attend and interpret at College assemblies, camps, excursions, TAFE and sporting activities as required.
  • Support deaf and hard of hearing students, with additional disabilities or needs with learning, organisational, emotional or communication difficulties.Ìý
  • Assist in the maintenance and use of assistive listening devices (soundfields) and live captioning.
  • Work as part of a team, always maintaining confidentiality with private or sensitive information.
  • Follow procedures and practices as identified in St Mary’s Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) framework.
  • Collaborate with Teachers of the Deaf and mainstream staff in reporting on the effectiveness of supports provided for individual students and on issues arising in the classroom in relation to those supports.
  • Model respect for the Catholic faith within the College and partner school community.

Selection Criteria

a.ÌýÌýÌýÌýAbility to perform the role of an Educational Support - Auslan Educational Interpreter in primary and or secondary settings.Ìý
b.ÌýÌýÌýÌýAn awareness of deafness, and the educational, social and emotional needs of deaf and hard of hearing students.Ìý
c.ÌýÌýÌýÌýAn understanding of and ability to respond to the various communication styles of individual deaf students.Ìý
d.ÌýÌýÌýÌýWillingness to be flexible in duties undertaken and able to work as a member of a team.
e.ÌýÌýÌýÌýA demonstrated understanding of child safety and of appropriate behaviours when engaging with children.

Child Safety

The successful applicant will:

  • Be familiar with and comply with the school's child-safe policy and code of conduct, and any other policies or procedures relating to child safety
  • Assist in the provision of a child-safe environment for students

Who May Apply

  • People with relevant experience and/or qualifications in Auslan.Ìý
  • Holders of an appropriate NAATI recognition or willingness to work towards accreditation.
  • People suitable to engage in child-connected work.
  • Applicants must hold or be willing to acquire a Working with Children Check card and must be willing to undergo a National Police Record Check.

As a PBI, packaging is available to staff up to $15,900 of salary per annum which reduces tax and significantly increase take-home pay.
