Role Purpose

The Maintenance Officer plays a vital role in supporting the mission and daily operations of Emmaus Catholic Primary School by ensuring that the school’s buildings, facilities and grounds are safe, functional and well-presented.
This position contributes to creating an environment that reflects our commitment to excellence, care and stewardship, supporting high-quality teaching and learning.
This is a hands-on role suited to an individual who takes pride in their work, enjoys practical tasks and is committed to maintaining high standards across all aspects of the school environment.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include:

  • Maintaining gardens, landscaped areas and outdoor learning spaces across the school, including mowing, edging, pruning and waste removal
  • Operating groundskeeping equipment such as mowers, blowers and brush cutters safely and effectively
  • Performing routine maintenance tasks and minor building repairs (e.g. carpentry, painting and basic repairs within competency)
  • Assisting with preventative maintenance programs and regular inspections of buildings and facilities
  • Identifying, reporting and responding to maintenance issues, hazards or infrastructure concerns
  • Supporting the coordination and supervision of external contractors when required
  • Assisting with furniture movement, event setup and general operational support, including school events and functions
  • Ensuring the school environment is clean, safe and well-presented at all times
  • Supporting essential services checks (e.g. exits, lighting, general safety compliance)
  • Maintaining equipment and tools in a safe and serviceable condition
  • Contributing to the upkeep of spaces that support contemporary learning environments
  • Maintaining records of maintenance tasks and reporting ongoing or major issues

About You

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • Experience in groundskeeping, maintenance, facilities or a similar hands-on role
  • Ability to safely operate grounds maintenance equipment and tools
  • Strong practical and problem-solving skills
  • A proactive approach to identifying and addressing maintenance needs
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
  • A strong commitment to Work Health and Safety practices
  • Reliability, flexibility and a strong work ethic
  • Effective communication skills when working with staff, contractors and the school community

Requirements

  • Current Working With Children Check (Victoria) or willingness to obtain
  • National Police Check
  • Capacity to perform manual and outdoor work
  • Strong attention to safety, detail and presentation
  • Commitment to workplace health and safety practices and school compliance requirements

Desirable

  • Experience working within a school or educational environment
  • Basic trade or maintenance skills across a range of areas
  • Understanding of, and commitment to, the ethos and mission of a Catholic school
